What Is Landscaper SEO?

The word SEO is an abbreviation and stands for search engine optimization.

Landscaper SEO refers to the process of optimizing a landscaping business’s website for search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

The goal is to improve the website’s visibility and rank on search engine results pages (SERPs) with SEO keywords for landscapers that are related to landscaping services. The ultimate goal of landscaper SEO is to attract more organic traffic to the website, generate leads, and ultimately increase revenue for the business.

Keyword Research

Use The Dome

To get started with landscaper SEO keyword research get a blank Word or docs sheet. Then start writing down keywords you think someone interested in your product or service would search for in Google.

For example, if you do landscaping in New York then some examples would be landscaping New York, lawn care, New York, landscape New York, etc.

Also, write down what your potential customers would search for online to find a landscaping business.

Whether these keywords have any search volume is irrelevant at this point. Just brainstorm all the words you can come up with and write them down.

You can also include different variations of the same keyword. For example, if you plan to target the same service in different locations you could write down landscaping Newark, landscaping long island, etc.

This can be a great way to find additional keywords that are easy to rank for and can provide some great traffic to your website.

Eventually, you will train your brain until it becomes a breeze.

If you focus on locations specific landscaping keywords, have a look on Google Maps and see what the surrounding cities are called to get more ideas for keywords.

Google Intuitive Search

Head over to and type in the whole or partial keywords that you want your website to rank for in the search bar. Before hitting the search button, take a look at the dropdown menu that appears below.

You may find some relevant keywords that you hadn’t considered before. Make sure to add any relevant keywords to your list.

Next, it’s time to conduct a more thorough search for each of your selected keywords. Scroll through the search results and take a look at the “People also ask” or “More to ask” section. If there are any questions that you can answer with your content, be sure to include them in your document.

Finally, scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the “related searches” section. Here, you may find additional keywords or phrases that could be useful to add to your list. Repeat this process for several keywords, but be efficient and move on once you feel like you have enough information.

Top Competitor Analysis

The next step is to Google the service you want your landscaping business to rank for. Then select the top 3-5 competitors from the search results. The success they have had in SEO will determine how you should do your SEO.

When it comes to selecting competitors, choose the ones that you actually compete with and be realistic about it. For example, great competitors would be other landscaping businesses in your local area.

Start with competitors within your reach and then expand from there. Because established brands usually rank for quite difficult keywords.

If your website is new it will be very hard if not impossible to rank for the same keywords.

Focusing on difficult keywords could mean you have to spend a very long time optimizing until you start seeing any results at all. Start at the bottom with easy keywords and work your way up to achieve SEO success! That way you will see results earlier. It will reduce your chances of quitting or losing consistency with something where consistency is vital!

One thing worth noting is that ranking in the top 3 map pack can be very beneficial for local businesses.

Pull The Stats

There are many SEO tools you can use but Semrush and Ahrefs are the most famous. Semrush and Ahrefs are paid tools but Sermrush and many others have free trials.

There are also free tools out there but we don’t use them so we don’t feel comfortable recommending them. If you are serious about your SEO it might be worth investing in a paid tool like this. Ahrefs and Semrush start off at $89 and $120 per month respectively and they give you a lot of insights into how well a website performs online.

It also has many other features and benefits that can really help in your SEO strategy and your general marketing online.

Semrush can be used for keyword research and SEO and other digital marketing tasks

Anyway back to the task at hand. Put the competitors’ website links into the search bar. Then you will be presented with things like authority score (also called domain authority), organic search traffic, backlinks, how many keywords they rank for, what keywords they rank for, technical SEO, and user experience.

All this information tells us what is required in order to rank first and increase our online visibility.

Steal The Keywords

Now we look at the organic keywords that they rank for and write down all the ones relevant to our business. That means any keyword not applicable to our business we don’t write down. Some competitors might rank for thousands of keywords.

That means you go through every single one of them and write them down in the Word document or spreadsheet you created earlier. Do this for all the competitors you chose in step 2. This is now your keyword list.

Find the keywords that your competitors rank for with Ahrefs or Semrush

Also, these are keywords your competitors rank for which means you want to outrank them and take their traffic from them. The competition is telling you exactly what you have to do. Don’t reinvent the wheel.

Look at what’s already working and apply it to your website.

The fact that they rank high in search results means that they must be doing something right in Google’s eyes. So common sense tells you if you reverse engineer their success, then you should rank at the top with them.

And perhaps outrank them if you do a good job.

Scan Their Pages

Next, go through the web page that the competitor is ranking for and look at their on-site SEO. Things to look for are:

  • The overall layout, is it easy to understand what is the page about? Is the copy easy to read?
  • Is the keyword in the URL?
  • Is the keyword in the H1-tag?
  • How many times is the keyword used on the page?
  • Is the keyword in the anchor text?
  • The number of images on the page and does the Alt text and file name include the keyword?
  • Number CTAs or internal links
  • Are there any videos?
  • Is there a contact form?
  • Are there any reviews?
  • What about testimonials?
  • Is the price of the product or service included?
  • The number of words used on the page?

All this information gives you a fairly good understanding of what is expected of you to rank first. Write this down and have it handy for when actually creating the pages so you can refer to it when needed.

Sometimes it could be that the required work to rank first is so much that it is not worth it at this stage to pursue that keyword.

In that case, try to find a new one and then re-do this with a new keyword.

Create The Page

The next step in this landscaper SEO post is to create a web page based on the guidelines in the previous step but better.

That means creating a page that’s easier to read, has more descriptive content, is more engaging, and puts a new angle on the topic.

Focus on one keyword per page because then you don’t drift away from the main message of the page. Focusing on more than one keyword per page can result in poor user experience and worsen your rankings.

To get some inspiration for how to build your pages have a look at your top competitors. They can provide you with some great ideas for your own page.

Since they already rank at the top, that is a sign of what users want to see on the website.

If your website is brand new it’s also recommended to focus on a keyword with a low keyword difficulty and search volume.

When your website is new it doesn’t have any authority and without authority, you don’t rank. Hence starting with easy keywords will rank you faster.

So, begin with words that have a search volume of around 20-1000. Then work your way up to more competitive keywords and conquer your niche!

Page Speed And Mobile Responsiveness

Firstly, let’s talk about page speed. Did you know that the average attention span of a human being is only 8 seconds?

That’s shorter than the attention span of a goldfish! So, if your website takes too long to load, your potential customers are going to get impatient and leave.

They’ll move on to your competitors who have faster-loading websites.

Google actually considers page speed as a ranking factor for search engine results. That means, if your website is slow, Google will not rank it as high in search results. That means fewer people will find your business online.

As a landscaping business owner, being found online is crucial for your business’s success.

With Google Page Speed Insights and GTMetrix, you can see how fast your website loads and how to improve it.

In landscaper SEO, Google Page Speed Insights can be used to improve page speed
GT Metrix can also be used to improve page speed

Now, let’s move on to mobile responsiveness. Did you know that more than half of all internet traffic comes from mobile devices?

People are using their phones to browse the internet more than ever before.

So, if your website is not mobile-friendly, you’re going to lose out on a lot of potential customers.

Think about it, have you ever tried to browse a non-mobile-friendly website on your phone? It’s a nightmare!

You have to zoom in and out to read the text, and you have to scroll left and right to see the entire page. It’s a frustrating experience, and most people won’t bother with it.

They’ll just move on to a competitor’s website that is mobile-friendly.

And again, Google considers mobile responsiveness as a ranking factor.

So, if your website is not mobile-friendly, it will not rank as high in search results, and that means fewer people will find your business online.

Google has a mobile-friendly test that can help you with your mobile responsiveness.

if you improve your mobile friendliness with Google's Mobile Friendly Test you can improve your landscaper SEO as well

Alternatively, you just get your phone out and check out your website on your phone. That will also tell you if it is responsive.

So, make sure your website is fast and mobile-friendly. That means optimizing images, reducing the number of plugins, and using a responsive design.

If you’re not sure how to do this, don’t worry. There are plenty of web developers out there who can help you. landscaper SEO.

Titles And Meta Descriptions For Landscaper SEO

Title tags and meta descriptions are important elements of on-page optimization in SEO. They provide valuable information to search engines and potential visitors about the content of a webpage.

For landscaper SEO, they can play a critical role in attracting customers to your website.

Title tags are HTML elements that appear in the head section of a webpage. They are clickable headlines in search engine results pages (SERPs). They also provide a brief and concise summary of the content of the page.

It should reflect the page’s content while also incorporating relevant keywords.

For landscaper SEO title tag and meta description are very important

For example, a landscaper might use a title tag like:

“Expert Landscaping Services in Your Area – XYZ Landscaping”

This will convey the type of services offered and the company’s name.

Meta descriptions provide a brief summary of the content of the webpage. They should usually be no longer than 160 characters.

Wordcounter is great for this.

They appear below the title tag in SERPs and give users a better idea of what they can expect to find on the page.

Meta descriptions should be compelling and concise. And at the same time incorporate relevant keywords.

For example, a landscaper might use a meta description like:

“Transform your outdoor space with expert landscaping services from XYZ Landscaping. Contact us today for a free consultation!”

The importance of title tags and meta descriptions in landscaper SEO cannot be overstated. They are the first impression potential customers have of your website. That means they can significantly impact whether or not they click through to your site.

Besides, search engines use them to understand the content of a webpage. And determine how relevant it is to a user’s search query.

By optimizing your title tags and meta descriptions you can improve your chances of ranking higher. And drive more traffic to your website.

Here are some tips to increase CTR with title tags and meta descriptions:

  • Use brackets in the title tag
  • Include numbers in your title
  • Use emotionally charged words in your meta description like “amazing”, “powerful”, “free”,
  • Include the current year in the title
  • Avoid clickbait
  • Use a headline analyzer to see how good your title stage is

There are a few things you can do to optimize images for SEO. The first thing to do is to compress the images on a website like Optimizilla. This is an online image compressor that reduces the file size of your images.

That means the website loads faster because of the lower file size. If you want to rank locally with your SEO it might be worth geotagging your images.

Go to, upload your image, select the location on the map, and click “Write EXIF-tags”. This geotags your image for better local SEO.

Geo-tag your images for better SEO

The next step is to include your target keyword in the file name of your image. Ensure you use a hyphen between every word, for example, landscaping-new-york-city.jpeg.

Lastly, upload your image to the website and write a descriptive alt text that includes the keyword you are targeting.

All these steps might seem tedious but they are the small things that your competition is most likely not doing. Therefore they will give you an edge in the battle for the first spot in search results.

Link Building For Landscaper SEO

What is link building?

Yoast describes it as:

“Link building refers to the marketing efforts to get links from other websites to your website. It’s seen as one of the most powerful tools to achieve higher rankings in search engines”

Doing link building without any of the paid tools like the ones mentioned above can be very difficult.

But guest posting (discussed below) though doesn’t really need these paid tools as much as the other strategies.

Go onto Semrush or Ahrefs and search for the term you want to rank for.

If you scroll down you will find the top search results for that search terms and some data about those websites. Start to go through them to see which ones you can contact to get a high-quality backlink. Aim for both do-follows and no-follows in your link building.

You can also see how many backlinks and referring domains they have.

Alternatively, you could contact relevant blogs and websites that you already know about that might give you a good backlink.

Another solution would be to outsource this part too because this can also be very time-consuming.

Go to Fiverr or Upwork and try to find someone reliable that can help you. They will be able to get in contact with high-authority blogs and websites that are relevant to your industry.

You should at all costs avoid black hat SEO backlinks as this can harm your rankings.

Guest Posting

Another great way to get backlinks is to do guest posting.

This can be really beneficial and boost your SEO. The way you could approach this is to google the niche you are targeting with something like “write for us”, for example, “landscaping write for us”.

Go through the websites on the first page, maybe also the second page.

You want to find websites that are authoritative but also ensure their writing requirements meet yours. After that, document all this on a spreadsheet.

It is very important that the backlinks from your guest posting are relevant to your niche. So that means if you have a landscaping business you want backlinks from gardening and landscaping blogs and not fashion blogs.

When it comes to backlinks you should focus on quality over quantity! Having that approach will be way more beneficial in the long run.

Because it is easy to buy a lot of low-quality links but you run the risk of being penalized by Google. The worst case is being completely removed from the organic search results.

This requires some work but the payoff is well worth it. Only one good backlink from an authoritative and relevant blog can make a significant difference in your SEO!

Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is a free tool provided by Google. It allows businesses to create a listing for their company. This listing is visible on Google Maps and in Google search results.

Having a GBP is essential for local landscaping businesses. Especially if they want to improve their online presence and attract more customers.

Here are some specific ways that having a Google Business Profile can benefit your business:

This is called the map pack.

By having a Google Business Profile, your business is more likely to appear on this map. This makes it more visible to potential customers.

To improve your visibility, make sure your profile includes accurate and up-to-date information. That means including your business hours and location.

Improved credibility

This information helps potential customers make informed decisions about your business.

To improve your credibility, encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews on your profile. Then make sure to respond promptly to any reviews.

Enhanced customer engagement

The profile also allows you to interact with your customers. You can respond to reviews and answer questions, for example. This engagement can help you build relationships with customers and improve your reputation.

Increased website traffic

Your listing includes a link to your website, which can help drive traffic to your site.

For local landscaping businesses, this is especially important. Because then they can showcase their services and generate leads with their website.

To increase your website traffic make sure your website is mobile-friendly. You also want to ensure you optimize it for search engines.

Cost-effective advertising

A Google Business Profile is a free tool that allows you to advertise your business on Google.

This makes it a cost-effective way to increase your online visibility and reach potential customers. Use high-quality photos and videos on your Google Business Profile.

This will maximize the effectiveness of your advertising. Another thing is to include a clear call to action to encourage customers to take action.

Start promoting your page on social media. Post it on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and any other place that is relevant.

You could also include a link at the bottom of an answer you provided on a Reddit post for example.

We do this to get traffic to the website, and to show Google and other search engines that people are visiting our website. It will help you get ranked and indexed faster.

However, promoting your site doesn’t have to be only online. You can do stuff offline as well.

For example:

  • handing out business cards
  • offering coupons
  • creating flyers
  • walking around in public with a T-shirt that has your website on it
  • posting a sticker on your car
  • telling your friends about it
  • etc.

The list is literally endless of things you can do to promote your website. Just do what you have to do to get traffic to your site.
